CHAPTER 20

Wolf held onto his station to keep himself upright, but the scanners didn’t straighten themselves out until the ship stopped rolling.

The Upheaval tumbled away from Argulus, with the planet between the ship and the retreating alien fugitives. The three Alvai battleships hovered around the burning wreckage of the bomber that Wolf had just escaped.

He checked the route to rejoin his friends, only for the battleships to rotate around and come after him next. “Bastards!” he hissed, and hit the throttle again.

The Upheaval skimmed hard to the right, but the battleships put on speed to hunt him down. He made a dive for the planet, but the Alvai only cut him off.

“The Alvai are hailing you again,” Lasu announced.

“Don’t give me that shit!” Wolf yelled back. “Where are the Alakrels?”

“They’re still trying to stop the Alvai from reaching the depot.”

Wolf floundered for some way to stop these assholes from capturing him. He didn’t dare to call the Alakrels away from the depot. He zoomed around the planet, only to run into the Alvai force waiting there.

They all burst into a torrent of speed, trying to get in front of him, surround him, and maneuver him into positions where they could capture him. He couldn’t let that happen.

He rocketed from one battleship to the other, but they always intercepted him. He couldn’t get away.

He spotted an opening and went for it. Without warning, the battleship right in front of him disintegrated into a million flying modular blocks. He almost didn’t believe his own eyes. He’d never seen one of these things do this except when they were under attack.

Now it did it spontaneously to trap him. The battleship didn’t just fly to pieces randomly, either. It erupted perfectly to fling its modular pieces right into his path. He had to work hard to evade, especially now that there were so many more of them threatening him.

Evading battleships was easy compared to this. Each modular piece had a mind of its own. They could change direction to intercept him and make him turn where they wanted him to go.

They herded him toward a different battleship that unfolded to let him inside. He almost fell for the trap, but streaked away at the last second.

He searched for another way out, and his jaw dropped when another Raider and ten Wings whistled across his window. “Follow us, Wolf!” Olphet called. “We’ll get you out of here.”

“You shouldn’t have come back!” Wolf countered.

“Shut up!” Halrara boomed. “Follow Olphet and Cassian while the rest of us occupy these idiots.”

The Prodigy wheeled in behind the Upheaval, and all the cannons burst as one. The Grismina Faction joined Onir, Joram, Inel, and Avi to target the flying modular blocks and shoot a corridor of safety for Olphet, Cassian, and Wolf to get through.

“We’re breaking away!” Cassian called. “Everybody out!”

“We got a problem!” Onir yelled back.

Wolf checked his scanners and pulled the Upheaval around. Three more battleships disintegrated completely, until no battleships remained. Only their modular pieces whizzed and screamed in all directions.
